Spirituality in the Workplace

William Guillory defines spirituality this way, "Spirituality is that which comes from within, beyond the survival instincts of the mind. Each of us has a spiritual center, which is our connection to this source of inner knowing. Spirituality is 'essence' and religion is 'form.' Spirituality is the source of an unlimited number of forms the human experience may take."

What then you might ask is the role of spirituality in the workplace. For many of us, the workplace can be anything but truly spiritual. Even if the people we work with are genuinely spiritual by Guillory's definition, are the ambitions, methods and goals of the company we are employed by shared by us and/or spiritual in and of themselves?

Most people would say that they 'work to live, they do not 'live to work. ' Work is something that has to be done in order to do the things they really want to do, spend time with the family, enjoy hobbies, explore spirituality or whatever. With this kind of thinking, and the fact that most of us spend most of our waking time at work, doesn't this make life sound kind of sad and empty? What if those working hours could be made brighter and bring you the same sense of fulfillment that you have when you are doing those things you really want to do. What would that do to your quality of life as a whole? No more 'big black hole' that eats up your time. No more, 'thank God it's Friday. ' No more 'just another manic Monday.
